In case you’re new to my blog or you’ve somehow missed my 67,634,173 graduation posts on social media, two weeks ago, I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with my Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees!! The past couple of weeks since graduation have been wonderful. I’ve been able to read, relax, travel, spend time with family and friends, and think about how I plan to incorporate blogging into my career going forward. Now that I’m inching closer to starting residency, I’ve been purposefully reflecting on what type of blog content I want to create in this new phase of my life.
CHANGES TO MY BLOG A FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS
One of the things I enjoyed most about graduate school was the freedom to do what I wanted when I wanted. As a result, my first year of blogging truly allowed me to explore the breadth of topics that I’m interested in. I gave a full breakdown of my first year of blogging in this Year in Review blog post so I won’t do that again here. But by way of highlights, my blog posts have covered topics ranging from faith, fitness, and fashion, to career development, cognitive behavioral therapy, and consulting. I’ve covered A LOT!
However, as I look forward toward starting residency, I know a few things will change.
1 . STARTING RESIDENCY MEANS I WON’T HAVE AS MUCH TIME TO EXPLORE MY HOBBIES.
Soon, I will have a time-intensive, full-time job as a resident physician. As much as I hate to admit it, this means that I will have less time to delve into my hobbies as much as I would like. I’m not saying that I won’t pursue my non-blogging hobbies; I just won’t have as much time to do so. The byproduct of that is I simply won’t have as many non-medical things to discuss on the blog. Thankfully, I absolutely LOVE to promote overall wellness, so I’ll be sure to keep my posts on wellness and work-life balance as a common theme.
2. I’LL HAVE LESS PREMED AND MEDICAL SCHOOL CONTENT TO SHARE.
Over the next couple of months, I plan to focus heavily on sharing the remaining premed and med school related content that I have in my drafts. As I move further and further away from the student phase in my life, my advice on these topics will become less relevant. So I want to make sure to share all of my premed and medical school content while the ideas are still fresh! Eventually, however, I’ll start to phase out the content related to premed life and medical school.
If you’re one of the premed or medical school students who follow me, this doesn’t mean that I’ll stop mentoring or responding to your questions going forward! Please feel free to continue to reach out! One of my personal/professional goals is to get more minority students to consider a career in psychiatry. So, if you have even the slightest inkling toward treating patients with mental illnesses, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE shoot me an email!
CHANGES TO MY BLOG MONTHS AND YEARS AFTER STARTING RESIDENCY
Thinking even further into the future, I plan to use my blog to create content related to my professional and personal interests as it relates to wellness, mental health, healthcare administration, and entrepreneurship. Basically, I want to chronicle my experiences as a #DualDegreeDoc. As such, over time, I’ll begin to shift my blog’s focus toward the following topics:
TIPS FOR PROMOTING FINANCIAL, EMOTIONAL, MENTAL, PHYSICAL, AND SPIRITUAL WELLNESS
MEDICINE IN THE NEWS (HOT TOPICS)
PSYCHOLOGY THEORIES
PSYCHIATRY IN 60 SECONDS VIDEOS
NARRATIVE MEDICINE PIECES SHOWCASING THE IMPACT OF PATIENT-PROVIDER INTERACTIONS
AND MORE….
I hope that as I make this transition with my blog content, you’ll stay along for the #JourneyWithDrJordan. I’m excited to start this new phase in my life, and I’m even more ecstatic to chronicle the journey and share it with you all. As always, thanks so much for your support!
Peace and blessings,
Atasha Jordan, MD (to be)
