Using Holidays as a Day of Rest

Using Holidays as a Day of Rest

I’ve really been looking forward to Fourth of July, but it might not be for the reasons that you expect. Living in Philadelphia means that there is A LOT to do for Independence Day. Whether it’s the parade, free access to museums, massive sand sculptures, concerts, or the huge fireworks display, Philly is poppin’ on July 4th. Philadelphia was the first capital of the US, after all. However, I haven’t been excited for these activities. Don’t get me wrong, I plan to take in the fireworks and maybe some of the festivals later today, but my excitement stems from something else. I’ve been looking forward to the holiday because, to me, July 4th is a day of rest!

In general, I tend to go non-stop. Growing up with a go-getter mum like I did, it was almost impossible not to become just like her. Through most of my weeks, I’m either grinding at school, in the hospital, or on my internship, but I fully recognize the importance of taking time to rest – time to take care of myself. So that’s what I’m doing today! In the Bible, Genesis 2:2 says, “He rested on the seventh day from all His work that he had done.” God set a great example for us in demonstrating the importance of resting.

For me, resting has many different forms. Today, I went to the gym, washed my hair, and chilled at a café writing with a friend. On another day of rest, I might get my nails done or binge watch some tv. A day of rest might be completely different to you. I hope that you’ll consider using holidays as a day of rest to do whatever it is that brings you joy, peace, and rest.  Your mind, body, and soul will thank you.

Peace and blessings,

Atasha Jordan, MD (to be)
