For instance, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"opioid use disorder (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK458661\/\" target=\"_blank\">opioid use disorder<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"alcohol use disorder (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/article-abstract\/2647075\" target=\"_blank\">alcohol use disorder<\/a> have been on the rise in recent decades. However, many people do not even realize that they have an illness.  Of note, SUD is not one illness. Rather, it is a collection of diseases representing ten categories of substances with potential for disordered use (e.g alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine, Xanax, tobacco, etc.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the  <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3bBMb3Z\" target=\"_blank\">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition<\/a><\/em> (DSM-5) &#8211; the psychiatrist\u2019s guide for diagnosis &#8211; there are 11 criteria that comprise SUD. Listed below are the 11 criteria for SUD. As a whole,  substance use disorder is likely present when a person\u2019s pattern of substance use leads to unintended, poor outcomes.   Less than 2 criteria indicate that no illness is present. Two to three criteria indicate mild SUD.
