In just two days, I will become a doctor.<\/p>\n

Writing those words out truly gives me all the feels. I\u2026will\u2026become\u2026a\u2026doctor!<\/p>\n

When I was a care-free four-year-old in Barbados, my pastor prophesied that I would become a physician. At the time, I didn\u2019t take much stock in what he said. After all, I was a four-year-old focused on my latest coloring masterpiece in church. However, his words stayed with me, such that whenever little Atasha was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, the answer was always, \u201cI\u2019m going to be a doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fast forward 20+ years, and here I am. I\u2019m two days away from a life-long dream. But not only am I becoming a doctor, I\u2019m becoming a Master of Business Administration as well! I don\u2019t think my younger self would have predicted that!<\/p>\n

As I celebrate this accomplishment with family and friends, I can\u2019t help but stop to reflect on the motivators that have gotten me to this point - my faith, family, friends, patients, and myself.<\/p>\n

What It Means to Me to Become a Doctor\u2026<\/strong><\/h5>\n
\u2026For My Family<\/strong><\/h6>\n

I don\u2019t come from a line of physicians. Rather, I am the granddaughter of Irma and Theophilus, farmers from the beautiful island of Tobago. Neither of my maternal grandparents had the chance to attain more than an elementary school education, but they were tenacious, loving, and faithful. I am the granddaughter of Eurene and Joseph, general workers on plantations in Barbados who worked diligently to provide for their family. My grandparents all prayed and believed that their work and faith could help to provide opportunities for their children and grandchildren.<\/p>\n

I am the daughter of Beverley and Alfred. The sister of Alisha and Alex. The niece and cousin to dozens of family members around the world. We all know that it takes a village to raise a child. My village was huge and their support even greater. When I think of where my family has come from and how much further we can go, I remember that this journey is for them.<\/p>\n
